What is Neurofeedback? A Deeper Look
Neurofeedback is a specialized form of training designed to enhance the functioning of your central nervous system and brain. It can be understood as sophisticated brainwave training.
How it works: Tiny sensors placed on your scalp read your brainwaves (using an Electroencephalogram, or EEG). A system then monitors these brainwave patterns and provides a corresponding signal back to your brain. This feedback helps your brain learn to operate with greater flexibility, mental control, and stability.
The Goal: Through this process, your brain is encouraged to establish healthy neural pathways and maintain balanced levels of crucial brain chemicals (such as serotonin, GABA, and dopamine). This helps your nervous system sustain a state of calm and rational thinking, moving away from stress responses.
Approach: Micro Current Neurofeedback
The specific system we use, known as Micro Current Neurofeedback, involves applying a small signal of energy to the brain.
This technique involves delivering a minute signal of energy (a tiny microcurrent, approximately 100th of an AA battery) through electrodes placed on specific areas of the scalp. The objective is to gently encourage the adjustment of your brain waves toward more desirable patterns, such as those associated with calmness or heightened focus. The "feedback" part means the system continuously monitors your brain's response and refines the signal in real-time.
Safety and Sessions
Neurofeedback is considered a safe way to retrain the brain. It's not a medical procedure.
Side Effects: Side effects are minimal or none. If they occur, they are usually very mild and short-lived (like a slight headache or dizziness) and may last only a few minutes.
Session Expectations:
Every person is unique, so the total number of Neurofeedback sessions can vary.
Many clients notice early improvements, within the first few sessions.
Most reported meaningful positive shift by sessions 3–5.
Two sessions per week is the most common schedule for steady progress.
Clients with more complex or intense challenges may benefit from additional weekly sessions.
Neurofeedback is cumulative – consistent training helps the benefits become more lasting, stable, and sustainable over time.
Some may choose to pay for one session at a time, but many prefer to purchase a discounted package of 12 sessions.
Session Length: The first session is usually around 45 minutes, but the time necessary may vary slightly. Follow-up sessions may last from 20 to 30 minutes on average. Sensors are placed on your head, and a computer analyzes your brainwaves, sending back a tiny signal. You sit quietly, focusing on a calming form of breathing that supports deep relaxation.
People often report observing a feeling of a deeper sense of calm and a slight clearing of negative thoughts, even in the initial session.
